What is Techodyssey?
This is somewhere to share my experiences with photography, computers and other technology. I am no expert but have years of experience. One thing I have learnt is how much I still have to learn. This blog gives me a chance to share what I have learnt, hopefully it will help others.
Photography Gear
I use both film and digital cameras, but predominately digital these days. Both still have a place I feel. But I have a dslr, a Canon 400d. It is a fine camera that I feel comfortable using. This is something I couldn’t say for my Nikon F80, I never liked it as much as the F601M which is the best camera I have ever owned. My next purchase will be a macro lens for the Canon. My other digital camera, a FujiFilm S5500 which I have had since 2005, still sees regular use as it is always there and ready to go. It is in the car most of the time and still takes good photos and reasonable video.
My most common subjects are plants, railways and wildlife.
I have recently added a Panasonic SD-700 HD video camera to my kit. I have used video before, particularly for trains, but haven’t for some time now. It will be an interesting experiment.
Computers
Tired of the cost and bloat of Windows I have been using Linux, specifically Fedora as my primary OS for sometime now. Most, but not all, of the software I use daily is free and open source. It has been a mostly happy transformation but not perfect. I still dual boot with XP but only to update my satnav.
I’ve used KDE as my main desktop environment since KDE 3 days. I also use other desktops particularly Xfce which I find suits older computers a little better than KDE. My principal distro for the last few years has been Fedora and a Fedora remix called Kororaa.
Location
I live in the Hawkesbury Valley on the northwestern outskirts of Sydney Australia, at the base of the beautiful Blue Mountains. Not country but not quite city, the best and worst of both.
